Have You Forgotten How To Fly?

Updated: Jun 12, 2019

Yesterday, the children’s choir my daughter is a part of went to a trampoline up park, Defy Gravity. The parents were given the option to pay for the chance to play in the jump arena as well, and being the super grown-up adults we are, of course the hubby and I wanted to play! And play we did! We did obstacles, we battled each other on the balance beams, we jumped on the mega trampolines. And as I was jumping, I was completely taken aback by how free I felt. I think it’s amazing how something as simple and silly as jumping up and down can seem to shave years off your age. I was instantly transported back to childhood and I understood exactly why children love to play, run, and jump. It occurred to me that I had forgotten how to fly.

If you’re familiar with Peter Pan, you know that once the children grow up, they forget how to fly. They don’t remember how to reach Neverland. But, yesterday, I catch a glimpse. I not only remembered my childhood, but, for the first time in years, I could actually feel my childhood. Don’t get me wrong, I am thoroughly enjoying my adult years, and still have a lot of fun. But there’s something about the carefree feeling of “flying” that takes you to a place that normally adults cannot go.

At some point in life, we get caught up in work and responsibility and endless tasks that continuously take us further and further away from the beauty and innocence of childhood. Having childlike fun is not only something that we don’t do, but somehow seems like something we shouldn’t do. But I’m here to tell you that that is not true. I can’t remember the last time I felt this type of joy; playing with my child as though I was a child myself. There is something beautiful about that experience. I would like to challenge you to take time out and remember how to fly. Maybe you don’t make it all the way back to Neverland on your first try. That’s ok. The more often you attempt to see the world through a child’s eyes by being mindful, curious and carefree, the more the map of Neverland will form in your mind. Happy flying!

P.S. I sprained my ankle while bouncing on the trampoline. I mean, after all, I’m a

30-something year old woman, not a seven year old, lol. But it was totally worth it ;)
