Am I Good Enough?
Updated: Jun 12, 2019
“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
Ok, I have a confession to make. Up until quite recently (more recent than I’d actually like to admit), I was still struggling with an intense desire to “feel good enough”. I was jumping through all kinds of hoops just to feel like I belonged, to feel like I was worthy. I thought, “maybe if I can show how good of a wife and mother I am, and how happy of a life we have, then they’ll think I’m good enough.” But, to my dismay, that wasn’t enough. I still found myself trying to measure up. So, then I thought, “maybe if I start a successful business, I’ll be good enough.” If I’m in charge of my own company, surely they’ll see my worth. Well, I did that, but the business I founded wasn’t enough to impress those that I felt I needed to prove my worth to. Then I thought, “I’ll go back to school so I can add some extra letters behind my name. That will show them I’m worthy of their respect!” But, of course, that didn’t work either. It took a long time for me to come to the realization that I don’t need others to think highly of me. I don’t need any outside approval. I don’t have to “show the world” how happy I am, I just need to be happy. And I don’t need to prove my success to anyone. I know it’s there and that’s enough.
You see, a lot of us spend the majority of our time looking at ourselves through someone else’s eyes. It’s like we are always on stage, attempting a perfect performance. We can easily get caught up in the social media hype of “look where I went on vacation” and “look at my new house” and “look at all the designer clothes I just bought” that we lose sight of what’s real. We are stressing ourselves out to reach the unattainable. I encourage you to take a hard look at your life and decide who you are living it for. If your answer is anything other than “myself” it’s time to make some serious changes.
